#7 Как делать комплименты на английском
Добрый день! Я, Мари Староверова, приветствую вас на шоу "These strange people - Эти странные люди", которое мы делаем совместно с проектом Native Speakers Club.

Native Speakers Club -

Обязательно возьмите их себе на вооружение: it is an anticipation of new life, awesome, is also great, I love it, things are winding down, getting sort of cozy.

— Jesse, hello! How are you doing?
Great to see you again, Marie!
— Look, It's spring outside.
Yes, it really is. It's amazing to feel the sunshine. I love it so much!
— What makes spring so special? What do you think?
It's the feeling you get when the sun starts shining and the days grow longer. It's anticipation.
— Do you like spring? Is it your favorite season?
I like all the seasons. I have to be honest. I really do. I like all the seasons due to.. Each one has a special feel. Spring is great, it is an anticipation of new life, and then summer is awesome, of course. Autumn is also great. I love it. Things are winding down and getting sort of cozy. Winter is nice because Christmas is coming.

And then there are just two months out of the year that are really pretty rough. It's February and March. Especially February. But we're finished with that. That's it. We are through February so.. From here it's all sunshine and brightness ahead, so..
— You know, just a couple of days ago there was an International Woman's Day. In Russia, it is strongly associated with the beginning of spring and it is quite popular. Men give flowers to women and women try to be especially beautiful.

You've been living in Russia for so many years. How are Russian women different from women in Canada, for example? Any observations?
Mostly they are similar. Women are every where similar, and so are men. People are people wherever you go. I mean, there are some cultural differences. But one thing I noticed about women when I first came to Russia is that they are definitely more feminine. A lot more feminine than American, Canadian, North American women, even European women. And that's a wonderful thing. It's a beautiful thing.
— Can you give our listeners different adjectives how to describe a woman and a man?
Okay, more feminine women, right. Charming. Mysterious. Gorgeous. Pretty. Let's see. Beautiful. Fascinating.
— What about men?
Well, you know, I don't really think a lot about men. At all. Men, ok. But men can be tough, bold..
— Good-looking?
Well, I don't really notice that about men. Sure, you can say that. In general, you can say a guy's good-looking because beautiful and gorgeous are only for girls and pretty, these adjectives you can use for girls, for women. Boys - handsome, good-looking.
— Could you please explain to our listeners the difference between handsome and beautiful?
They both mean the same thing. But now in our modern culture, handsome is only used for boys and men and beautiful and pretty only for girls. That's just the way it's developed.

— I know trainings here in Russia where they teach men to pay compliments to women. Can you think of any examples of compliments to women from men?
Ok, let's see. How about «you've got the most gorgeous eyes I've ever seen», «I love the way you do your hair, please, don't change it». I think, women and men but I think women especially probably would like to hear «I love talking to you, you are such an interesting person».
— Thank you for interesting examples. In Russia men would open a door in front of women and help women put on a coat, for example. As we say it in Russia men strive to behave like gentlemen. As far as I heard such behavior can be considered sexist in the US and Canada. Is that true?
Yes, actually you are right.

It can be considered that. For some people, they really want to be equals. Some women and men, they want to be absolutely equals. Men don't help women carry bags or open doors, things like that. So that's another thing I noticed when I came to Russia. How the men were very gentlemanly, very courteous to women and women were very appreciative, so very nice balance, something that you might have seen a hundred of years ago in western countries and I think it's a wonderful part of Russian culture we should continue.
— So this is something that differentiates Russia from other cultures?
Yes, it does.
— Once you said that you are married to a Russian woman. What advice would you give to our listeners who are thinking of a spouse from another country and another culture?
Good question.

Well, every person is a world in themselves. It's difficult to really categorize people by cultures. People are individuals. And so it's quite difficult. For Russian women, though, you just have to really make sure Russian women notice.. flowers are very important to them. And I think the reason is because Russia is a place that doesn't have a lot of aesthetic beauty. A lot of gray and mud, and half of the year it's .. the weather is terrible so flowers being so bright and vibrant become much more important. Flowers and chocolate. All women love flowers and chocolate but I think for Russian women they are even more important I would say.
